Wellie Wombles

We were thrilled to receive a grant. The Wellie Wombles thank you all for your support.

The Mayor visited Freddie and Georgina from Welly Wombles and congratulated them on their award of £1000.00 that will go towards litter picking equipment for coffee outlets for the public to use.

“Prior to this grant, Wellie Wombles had to either borrow equipment from Wellingborough ECO group or fund raise through tabletop and jumble sales.

We have been fortunate to receive donations from companies, such a Mick George and Greggs and have had great support for our volunteers from Jonathan Ekins’ old cafe the Ugly Mugg and the Castello Lounge.

Then came along the fantastic boost when Councillor Lawman arranged for us to take possession of a large number of pickers and hoops, as well as brushes after the first Town Spring Clean event. With this, we could expand the number of volunteers we could equip on group picks, but we wanted to go further so applied for the grant we now have.

With this grant money, we have now been able to buy high viz vests in different colours and sizes, “Wombles at work” safety A frames, mugs for our “mug of the month” competition and more litter pickers and hoops. We are now in the process of ensuring that the eight hubs in town have enough equipment to loan out to volunteers.

We have supplied Weavers School with some equipment as twelve of their pupils come with us every two weeks to litter pick in the Town.

We want to go further still and intend to supply our local scouts, guides, youth groups and any other groups who want to become involved.

In the new year we will approach shops in the Town asking for them to have a group of volunteers to keep their carpark or frontage clear. We can now supply them the equipment they need.”
